Labiaplasty FAQs: What You Need to Know
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the labia minora (inner lips) to bring them into better proportion with the labia majora (outer lips). While there is a lot of information available online, much of it is contradictory. Below, we address some of the most frequently asked questions about labiaplasty to provide clarity and guidance.
What Is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and reshape the labia minora. The goal is to improve comfort, proportion, and aesthetics, particularly for patients who experience:
- Discomfort with clothing or physical activities.
- Irritation during exercise or daily hygiene routines.
- Pain or self-consciousness during sexual activity.
What Techniques Are Used for Labiaplasty?
There are two main surgical approaches:
- Trim Technique – Removes excess tissue along the border of the labia minora to create a smooth, symmetrical look.
- Wedge Technique – Excises a triangular section of tissue, preserving the natural labial edge while reducing bulk in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions.
At PSIW, we determine the best approach based on your individual anatomy and goals.
Can Labiaplasty Be Performed on Just One Side?
Yes. Many women have natural asymmetry, where one side protrudes more than the other. In
these cases, unilateral labiaplasty can be performed to restore balance and symmetry.
What Type of Anesthesia Is Used?
Labiaplasty is commonly performed under local anesthesia, but the level of sedation depends
on patient preference:
- Local Anesthesia Only – Patients can drive themselves home after the procedure.
- Local Anesthesia with Oral Sedation – Medications like Valium or Xanax are used for relaxation, requiring a designated driver.
- Twilight or General Anesthesia – Available for patients who prefer to be completely unaware during surgery.
What Is the Recovery Time?
Many patients have the procedure on a Friday and return to work by Monday. If you have more flexible time off, taking a few extra days is an option.
When Can I Resume Exercise?
- Light activity and walking are fine immediately after surgery.
- Cardio exercises can usually be resumed after the two-week follow-up.
- Activities that apply direct pressure (Peloton, horseback riding, etc.) should be avoided for about a month.
When Can I Resume Sexual Activity?
Patients should wait 4 to 6 weeks before resuming sexual activity, similar to other
activities that put pressure on the surgical area.
What If I Get My Period Around the Time of Surgery?
Labiaplasty can still be performed if you’re on your period. Patients can use either pads or tampons based on their comfort level.
Does Insurance Cover Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is typically considered an elective cosmetic procedure, so insurance
does not cover it. In rare cases, some insurance providers may offer coverage if the enlarged labia cause
significant hygiene issues or medical complications.
