Plastic Surgeon Dr. Anita Kulkarni Washington DC
Dr. Anita Kulkarni is a board certified plastic & reconstructive surgeon with a special interest in cosmetic surgery for women and breast reconstruction after mastectomy.
Dr. Kulkarni believes that the most important aspect of plastic surgery is developing a relationship with her patients that allows her to understand their aesthetic goals. Plastic surgery is unique among medical specialties in that the patient’s desires are central to treatment planning. As a female surgeon, Dr. Kulkarni instinctively identifies with her patients and has an intimate understanding of a woman’s desire to enhance her appearance in a natural way. She is dedicated to educating her patients on all the surgical and non-surgical treatments options.
An East Coast native, she was born and raised in New Jersey before relocating to the Chicago area to attend college at Northwestern University. She stayed in Chicago for medical school at the University of Chicago – Pritzker School of Medicine, where she excelled among her peers, earning induction into both the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She was subsequently accepted into the highly competitive integrated plastic surgery residency at the University of Michigan, one of the oldest and most respected plastic surgery training programs in the country.
At the University of Michigan, Dr. Kulkarni received comprehensive training in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. She earned several awards for research and teaching, published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles & book chapters, gave numerous national presentations, and was selected to be the Administrative Chief Resident in her final year of training.
Dr. Kulkarni then pursued an additional year of advanced training in state-of-the-art breast reconstruction techniques at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. At MSKCC, she developed an expertise in the newest techniques, including perforator flaps (DIEP, SIEA, SGAP etc.), one-stage direct-to-implant reconstruction, and oncoplastic breast surgery. Dr. Kulkarni has always enjoyed breast reconstruction, and cherishes the special relationships she has with her breast cancer patients.
