Why Implant Massage Is Important After Breast Augmentation
After breast augmentation, implant massage is a critical part of post-operative care. We recommend that patients begin implant massage around two weeks after surgery to help maintain softness, mobility, and natural positioning.
Why Is Implant Massage Necessary?
During breast augmentation, the surgeon creates a pocket larger than the implant itself to allow for proper positioning and movement. Without massage, the implants may settle unevenly or the pocket may tighten, leading to complications such as capsular contracture (excess scar tissue forming around the implant).
How Breast Implants Move Naturally
- When standing, implants tend to drop to the bottom of the pocket due to gravity.
- When lying down, they shift slightly outward to the sides.
- The two directions implants do not naturally move are upward and inward toward the center, which is why implant massage is necessary.
How to Perform Implant Massage
1. Upward Massage
- Place the back of your hand against your chest.
- Use the other hand to rock the implant upward and hold for a few seconds.
2. Inward Massage
- Using the same technique, gently push the implant inward toward the center of the chest.
- Hold for a few seconds before releasing.
3. Repeat on the Other Side
- Switch hands and perform the same movements on the opposite breast.
- Repeat the process a few times daily as directed by your surgeon.
The Benefits of Implant Massage
- Helps prevent capsular contracture by keeping the pocket open.
- Encourages natural implant mobility for a softer, more natural feel.
- Reduces tightness and stiffness in the breast tissue.
