PRP and PRFM harness your body’s own growth factors to restore hair, rejuvenate skin, and subtly replenish facial volume.

Regenerative Aesthetics. Backed by Science. Delivered with Precision.

At the Plastic Surgery Institute of Washington, innovation is never adopted casually. Our board-certified physicians evaluate every treatment for safety, scientific validity, and meaningful patient benefit. PRP and PRFM represent a sophisticated, regenerative approach. We offer these treatments because they align with our philosophy: results that look remarkably natural, achieved through advanced technique and ethical care.

What Is PRP? What Is PRFM? How Do They Work?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is derived from a small sample of your own blood. After centrifugation, platelets are concentrated and reintroduced into targeted areas. Platelets contain growth factors that support tissue repair, collagen production, and regenerative signaling.

PRFM (Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix) builds upon PRP by forming a fibrin matrix that allows for a slower, sustained release of growth factors. This matrix enhances stability and prolongs regenerative stimulation.

Using the Selphyl® system, PRFM can be further processed into a plasma gel known as Selphyller®—a refined autologous filler, meaning it comes entirely from your own body. This natural filler provides soft, subtle volume while continuing to stimulate collagen production over time.

Treatment Options

  • 1. Hair Restoration

PRP and PRFM are key components of our Hair Restoration program, led by Dr. Daniel Tran. Research supports PRP’s role in improving hair density and thickness in androgenetic alopecia by stimulating dormant follicles and prolonging the growth phase of hair.

Important Note: PRP/PRFM helps stimulate thinning or dormant follicles. It does not restore hair where follicles are no longer viable.

  • 2. Skin Rejuvenation

    PRP/PRFM can be:

    • Combined with microneedling to enhance collagen stimulation
    • Added to laser or skin treatments to introduce concentrated growth factors
    • Used independently to improve tone and texture

Growth factors released by platelets stimulate fibroblasts and collagen synthesis, thereby improving elasticity and skin quality (PMC).

  • 3. Natural Volume Restoration (PRFM/Selphyller®)

PRP can be transformed into PRFM or Selphyller®. It builds upon PRP technology to create a plasma gel, an elegant, autologous filler ideal for:

    • Nasolabial folds
    • Under-eye hollowing
    • Facial volume loss
    • Areas requiring subtle, natural contour refinement

    Why our patients love Selphyller®:

    • All-natural alternative to hyaluronic acid fillers
    • Designed to last approximately 4-6 months (sometimes longer)
    • Can easily be dissolved with aggressive massage to the treated area or saline if adjustment is needed
    • Stimulates long-term collagen regeneration
    • Avoids the Tyndall effect (bluish discoloration) sometimes seen with traditional under-eye fillers

Our skilled injectors—including our Board-Certified Physicians—frequently use PRFM gel for delicate under-eye rejuvenation, where refinement and safety matter most.

Benefits of PRP, PRFM & Selphyller®

This advanced technique offers meaningful advantages for patients seeking structural, comprehensive facial rejuvenation tailored with precision.

  • A biologic approach: Because these treatments are derived from your own plasma, they integrate seamlessly with your tissue, without introducing synthetic material almost eliminating the possibility for allergic reactions.
  • Soft sculpting: Ideal for patients who want improvement that feels balanced and understated rather than dramatic or overfilled.
  • Minimal downtime: Most patients resume normal activities quickly, making this an attractive option for those with active professional and social lives.
  • Reduced risk of visible filler irregularities: Because Selphyller® is an autologous plasma gel, it offers a smooth integration in delicate areas such as the under-eyes.
  • Compatible with comprehensive treatment plans: PRP and PRFM can complement surgical procedures, laser therapies, and advanced skin treatments as part of a long-term aesthetic strategy.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Treatments are best for:

  • Men and women experiencing hair thinning (not complete follicle loss)
  • Patients seeking natural volume restoration
  • Individuals wanting an alternative to synthetic fillers
  • Patients looking to enhance skin treatments with natural growth factors
  • Those interested in stimulating collagen production naturally

However, candidacy for PRP and PRFM is first determined by your overall health, not solely by your aesthetic goals. You may be an appropriate candidate if you:

  • Are in generally good health without active systemic infection
  • Have adequate platelet levels and normal clotting function
  • Do not have uncontrolled bleeding disorders
  • Are not currently undergoing active chemotherapy
  • Do not have active scalp infections (for hair treatments)
  • Do not have significant inflammatory skin conditions in the treatment area
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Are able to temporarily pause certain blood-thinning medications, if medically appropriate and cleared by your prescribing physician

Because PRP and PRFM rely on the function and quality of your own platelets, certain medical conditions—such as severe anemia, platelet dysfunction syndromes, or chronic liver disease—may limit treatment effectiveness.

For hair restoration specifically, patients must have viable, though weakened, hair follicles. Areas where follicles are no longer active will not respond to regenerative stimulation.

What to Expect Before, During, and After

Consultation

Your experience begins with a personalized consultation, during which we review your goals and medical history in order to determine candidacy.

Pricing varies based on treatment area and number of sessions required. A detailed investment plan is provided during your visit.

Procedure

  • A small blood sample is drawn
  • The sample is spun in a centrifuge to isolate platelets or PRP
  • The PRP is then applied topically or injected
  • Alternatively the PRP can be transformed into PRFM using the Selphyl® system
  • For volume restoration, PRFM is converted into Selphyller® gel
  • The prepared solution is precisely injected into targeted areas
  • Treatment typically takes 45–60 minutes

Recovery and Results

  • Mild swelling or bruising may occur
  • Most patients return to normal activity within 24–48 hours
  • Hair treatments usually require a series of sessions
  • Skin improvements develop gradually over weeks
  • Selphyller® volume is visible immediately and refines as collagen develops
  • Results may last up to 6 months, sometimes longer, depending on individual response

FAQs

How many PRP or PRFM sessions will I need?

Treatment plans vary depending on the area addressed. Hair restoration typically involves a series of initial treatments spaced several weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions. Skin and volume treatments may require fewer sessions, depending on your response and desired longevity.

Is the procedure painful?

Most patients describe mild, temporary discomfort. A topical anesthetic is often applied for facial treatments, and scalp procedures may include local numbing. The treatment is well-tolerated and brief.

What are the risks and possible side effects?

Because PRP and PRFM are derived from your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction is extremely low. However, as with any injectable procedure, potential side effects include swelling, bruising, tenderness, temporary redness, or minor lumpiness. Rare risks may include infection, vascular compromise, or uneven results. Choosing experienced injectors in an accredited medical setting significantly reduces these risks.

Can Selphyller® be dissolved with saline?

Unlike synthetic fillers, which require enzymatic reversal, PRFM gel can be softened or dispersed with sterile saline if adjustment is necessary. Saline gently breaks down the fibrin matrix structure, allowing refinement of the treated area. This provides an added layer of flexibility and reassurance.

Can PRP or PRFM be performed after surgery?

Yes, in many cases, these treatments can complement surgical procedures. They may be used to support healing or enhance overall aesthetic outcomes, depending on your recovery timeline and your surgeon’s recommendations.

How long should I wait between treatments?

Maintenance timing depends on the treatment area and your individual response. Many patients choose follow-up sessions every 6–12 months for facial rejuvenation, while hair restoration maintenance schedules may differ. We develop a personalized plan based on your biology and goals.
